Satisfied client, happy team… Would you call it a success? In the end it’s the satisfaction of the both sides that matters. It’s an ultimate measure of a good work and good outcome. When thinking what to measure in agile software development we often focus on the details and forget the bigger picture.

Agile Satisfaction Factors

Agile software development is a system. This system consists of a team, a product and a client. The client wants a product and the team is able to deliver it. One of the ways how to evaluate whether the system functions well, is a team’s and a client’s satisfaction. After all, we are all humans.

When is the customer satisfied? When he/she gets what they want (value), the product is functioning flawlessly (quality) in the shortest possible time or on time (predictability).

When is the team satisfied? When there are nice folks on the team, they know what customer wants, all the needed tools are available (hardware, software) and they are happy about work processes.

For an agile coach who just starts working with a new agile team is good to assess this on a high level, together with the team and the client, and see where the gaps are. It’ll be easier then to drill down and focus on the most important factors to ramp up satisfaction.
